SkinScriptRx: Facial Moisturizers
Do I need to Moisturize and How Often?
So, as controversial as it may seem, EVERYONE needs to moisturize. People with oily, acneic skin tend to avoid the moisturizing step in their routine, hoping to cut down on the oil production throughout the day. But what they may not realize is, not moisturizing can cause your skin to produce more oil! (Yikes) That isn't at all to say that all moisturizers are created equal. Of course, the best moisturizer for oily skin will not be the best moisturizer for dry skin. Someone with dry or even dehydrated skin may need a moisturizer with a thick or occlusive barrier (to prevent trans-epidermal water loss and protect skin from environmental factors) and a person with oily or acneic skin will need a moisturizer that is lightweight, oil free, and also heals while soothing and calming skin irritation. Regardless of skin type or condition, everyone should moisturize daily after the cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating steps of your skincare regimen to see the best overall results of their skincare routine. How to Use a Moisturizer?
Moisturizers should be applied after cleansing and exfoliating (exfoliation how to's). Most importantly you must use the best moisturizer for your skin type and condition for the best results. The best moisturizer for your skin will also depend on the results you would like to achieve or skin problems you want to address. For example, if you want to decrease oiliness you will need to use a moisturizer that balances water/oil content of the skin. Or, if you want to get rid of fine lines, you will need a product that hydrates and protects the skin from environmental damage.
What is the BEST moisturizer for my skin type?
So as mentioned above different skin types (dry, oily, normal, combination) and skin conditions (dehydrated, acneic, dermatitis) require a different skin care treatment including moisturizer. Dry and dehydrated skin requires more protection from harsh elements while acneic skin require products with anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Below I will discuss my professional recommendation and the moisturizers that I like to use on my clients based on their concerns, skin types, and conditions.
